Un caso di committenza dell’Ambasciatore francese a Roma: il Componimento Dramatico di Jommelli e il quadro Fête musicale di Pannini per le nozze del Delfino di Francia (1747)*

Abstract

Frédéric-Jérôme de la Rochefoucauld fu ambasciatore francese presso la Santa Sede dal 1745 al 1748. Nel 1747 si celebrarono a Versailles le seconde nozze del Delfino di Francia, Louis Ferdinand, con Maria Giuseppa di Sassonia. Come consuetudine, l’evento fu occasione di grandiosi festeggiamenti anche a Roma.

Il saggio ricostruisce le manifestazioni di allegrezza organizzate nella città papale dall’ambasciatore: Messa e Te Deum a S. Luigi de’ Francesi, corteggio, fuochi d’artificio, rinfreschi e una magnifica cantata celebrativa eseguita per tre sere presso il teatro Argentina. L’autore della musica della cantata fu Niccolò Jommelli, già affermato a Roma come operista; la stesura del testo del libretto venne affidata a Flaminio Scarselli, bolognese. Le scenografie e le decorazioni del teatro furono opera di Giuseppe Pannini, figlio del più celebre Gian Paolo, già da molti anni a servizio degli ambasciatori francesi a Roma. Quest’ultimo ci ha lasciato una tela commemorativa della serata commissionata come dono al Re di Francia dall’ambasciatore, ora conservata presso il Musée du Louvre,fonte di preziose informazioni anche per la ricostruzione dell’evento musicale.

Numerose le fonti di diversa natura a noi pervenute che contribuiscono a rendere la ricostruzione di questo evento particolarmente vivida e affidabile: oltre alle cronache dell’epoca, abbiamo una nutrita corrispondenza tra vari personaggi di spicco; i documenti conservati presso l’Archives des Pieux Etablissements de France à Rome et à Lorette relativi alle esecuzioni musicali a S. Luigi de’ Francesi; il libretto di Flaminio Scarselli; la partitura della cantata, recentemente ritrovata e di cui si dà qui la prima descrizione.

A commission from the French ambassador at Rome: Jommelli’sComponimento Dramatico and Pannini’s Fête musicale for the wedding of the Dauphin of France (1747)*

Frédéric-Jérôme de la Rochefoucauld was French Ambassador to the Holy See from 1745 to 1748. In 1747 the second wedding of the Dauphin of France, Louis Ferdinand, to Maria Giuseppa of Saxony was celebrated at Versailles. As was the custom, the event was the occasion for grandiose festivities also in Rome.

The paper reconstructs the manifestazioni di allegrezza organized in the papal city by the Ambassador: Mass and Te Deum at St. Luigi de’ Francesi, procession, fireworks, refreshments and a magnificent celebratory cantata sung at Teatro Argentina on three successive evenings. The composer of the music of the cantata was Niccolò Jommelli, already well-known at Rome for his operas; the text of the libretto was entrusted to the Bolognese Flaminio Scarselli.

Giuseppe Pannini was responsible for the scenography and decorations of the theatre; son of the more celebrated Gian Paolo he had already been for many years in the employ of the French ambassadors at Rome. A commemorative painting of the event byGian Paolo, commissioned by the Ambassador as a gift to the King of France, is now preserved at the Musée du Louvre and is a source of precious information also for reconstructing this musical event. Numerous different sources have reached us which contribute to making the reconstruction of this event particularly vivid and dependable: in addition to the chronicles of the period we have not only a considerable corrispondence between various distinguished personalities of the time, but also documents in the Archives des Pieux Etablissements de France à Rome et à Lorette relative to the musical performances at S. Luigi de’ Francesi, the libretto of Flaminio Scarselli and the score of the cantata, recently rediscovered and given here its first description.
